FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS.

What do you mean employees and customers are chronically distracted? If you own a mobile device, you’ll check it 150 times a day on average. Over the past decade, our attention spans have dropped 30%. With Netflix, Spotify, Instagram and other streaming content, we can completely opt out of unwanted communication. All of us have been affected by smartphones and tablets. So, as we fill our minds with empty calories, more substantial fare like learning is ridiculously boring by comparison. Mindspace exists to bridge that gap. We don’t sacrifice substance for style. Those don’t have to be mutually exclusive and we prove it every day.

What are my gamification options in the market? You’ve got three main options. You can hire a game studio to build you a game and put your logo and/or messaging into it. But if you do this, you’re competing directly with tons of free, high-quality games. And 70% of games built by studios fail in the marketplace, so the odds of success are sketchy. Option two is to license a PBL engine and attach it to any online experience. This can work just fine, but badges don’t offer any real value and the novelty wears off over time. Option three is our favorite: An agency like Mindspace that is 100% focused on building fun, interactive learning experiences enhanced by value-based gamification. We never let the game get in the way of the content. Take a look at our client results and you’ll see why that focus makes a difference.

What are game mechanics?Game mechanics are the tools, technologies and techniques used by game designers to engage their audience. There are dozens of different mechanics that Mindspace uses strategically to accomplish different objectives for each client like: cascading information theory, countdown, scarcity, sandbox, easter eggs and others. can be used in unique combinations to solve your communication problem.

How do you mitigate risk in a risk-averse company? The best way to reduce risk is through an agile, iterative approach that designs, tests and refines. That’s as safe as you can get for a custom, innovative project. That said, we’ve found that there is often an inverse relationship between innovation and risk aversion. So, our clients with ambitious goals need to be willing to try something truly different. The problem with risk-averse cultures is that stakeholders tend to ask variants of this question: “Show me an example of a time when you did the exact same thing for a company just like ours with the same target audience and objectives.” Our response is something like, “No problem! Give us the name of your closest competitor and we’ll get back to you in 90 days.” All jokes aside, each project is custom and we can’t responsibly compare any project directly with any other. Even in the same industry there are way too many variables. So, we invite potential clients to learn about us. Talk to us, look at the clients who trust us. Look at our case studies and you’ll see that we get results consistently, not by being intimately familiar with your industry, but by bringing our mastery of custom learning and gamification to a collaborative effort. Mindspace is an agile shop and we continue to refine a project until we achieve the desired outcome. That’s the best way for a risk-averse company to innovate.

What’s it like to work with Mindspace?Fun. Transparent. Reassuring. We have an agile process that takes us through strategy, content, game design, UX, visual design and development. We’ll invite you into creative brainstorms and pull back the curtain. Or, if you don’t have time to get involved we’ll take care of it and show you things before they're totally baked to get your input. You’ll know you’re being taken care of and you’ll be excited to show off the work.

How do you come up with a concept? We start by asking you a bunch of questions about your objectives, target, behaviors, rewards, etc. Some of these are typical for a creative agency, some are unique to Mindspace. Then we study up on any research you have and decide if we need additional research to supplement what we know. We generate a list of actionable insights and share them with you. From there we get our strategy, content, design, game design, UX and dev talent together to brainstorm the learning experience and flesh out the concept details for client review.
-
How much do you charge?Since we’re a custom shop, it really varies. We have taken on projects from the five figures to the low seven figures. We’ve even taken on projects that piqued our curiosity for less. Rest assured, we can build a solution to fit most reasonable budgets.

How can you make my boring content engaging? We’ve worked some hard cases in our history, including everything from deeply technical writing to dense technical and financial jargon. So, here’s how we transform your content without losing its soul. Typically we evaluate your existing content and develop a content strategy. We’ll determine the total amount of content needed, and figure out the right cadence. We’ll often trim it way back with some word economy tricks that retain the key messaging. We’ll remove most of the jargon and make it conversational. We’ll swap out paragraphs for images, video and interactivity whenever possible. Let’s say you have a densely-packed PDF with a lot of jargon that would work better as tiny, conversational captions to images in a simulated interaction. We’ll figure that all out. We’ll stay true to your brand guidelines, keep it concise and integrate it with an interactive experience that amps up the engagement.
